George Conway

It is remarkable to reflect that the George Conway of 2026 supported Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign. That same year, his wife Kellyanne played a leading role in Trump's victory and later became one of the administration's most visible spokespersons. Given his standing within conservative circles, Conway was considered for the position of U.S. Solicitor General and later offered leadership of the Justice Department's Civil Division. Yet within days of Trump's inauguration, he concluded that he wanted no part of an administration defined by chaos, dishonesty, and contempt for democratic norms.

Conway's qualifications for a top position in the Department of Justice were exceptional. A magna cum laude graduate of Harvard University, he earned his law degree from Yale Law School, where he served as an editor of the Yale Law Journal. He later joined the New York-based Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz firm, becoming a partner at just thirty-four years of age. Over the next three decades, he established a national reputation as one of America's leading corporate litigators.

By 2018, Conway had emerged as one of Trump's most prominent conservative critics. Drawing on his deep understanding of constitutional law, he became a leading public voice explaining how Trump's conduct threatened democratic institutions and rule of law.

In 2019, Conway joined several Republican strategists in founding The Lincoln Project, an organization dedicated to defeating Trump and Trumpism. Through incisive commentary and hard-hitting political advertising, the group became a national force. His outspoken criticism made him a frequent target of Trump's personal attacks.

The growing political divide between George and Kellyanne Conway ultimately contributed to the dissolution of their marriage.  In 2020, he stepped away from The Lincoln Project to focus on his family. But he never retreated from the larger struggle. In 2024, he launched the podcast George Conway Explains It All with Sarah Longwell.

In January 2026, Conway vied unsuccessfully in the Democratic primary in New York's 12th Congressional District, hoping to play a role in the impeachment and conviction of Trump for rampant abuse of power.  Perhaps the most striking aspect of Conway's story has been his unwavering willingness to put country above the acquisition of power.

“The Trump Administration is forcing the courts into a perpetual game of whack-a-mole, requiring judges to stop one unlawful action after another.  Courts must do that work but were never intended to run the federal government!  When a president repeatedly violates the law or abuses the powers of the office, Congress has a moral and constitutional duty to act.  Impeachment and removal are the remedies provided in the Constitution, and Congress must have the courage to do its job.”
